Good news for Independent Contractors
The new government has announced that they have instructed the ATO to back off its crackdown on enticing independent contractors into employee arrangements.
This is a great development for current independent contractors, and also those looking to become self employed.
Whilst being a contractor has its benefits of being able to negotiate higher rates of pay, being able to work more flexible hours to suit your needs, there are certain drawbacks such as having to fund your own superannuation and workcover, and also having to sort out your own tax obligations which would otherwise be periodically paid by an employer if you were an employee.
Each individual brings with them different circumstances that may sway them either way towards being a contractor or an employee. We feel everyone should have the right to choose, given they meet the criteria, to work in whichever arrangement suits them best. The latest government announcement certainly gives this notion momentum.
